The Zamioculcas Raven Black Variegated is undoubtedly one of the most unusual and striking houseplants today. This rare variety combines the deep dark, almost black foliage of the popular 'Raven' with a subtle, unpredictable variegation in cream to light green patterns. The result is a dramatic contrast rarely seen in the plant world.
Like other Zamioculcas-species, this variety is native to the arid regions of East Africa. The plant is loved for its robust nature and its ability to survive for long periods of time without water. The Raven Black Variegated however, is a unique breeding form available only in small numbers from specialized growers.
What makes this plant truly exceptional is the combination of two rarities in one: the deep raven black color of the leaves and the spontaneous variegation. Where the common Zamioculcas zamiifolia variegated consists mainly of bright to light green leaves with variegated patterns, this variety goes one step further. The leaves are dark green upon emergence, but slowly color to deep black containing variegated areas. This makes each leaf unique and each plant different.
The dark base color also enhances the contrast with the light variegation, giving the plant an almost otherworldly appearance. Where ordinary variegated Zamioculcas has a fresh, airy appearance, the Raven Black Variegated pure exudes elegance and mystery.
This plant is surprisingly easy to care for, despite its rarity.
Tolerates low light conditions, but in sufficient indirect light the variegation develops best. Too much indirect light can cause burning or less intense color contrast.
Feels at home in room temperatures between 18 and 26°C. Avoid cold drafts and temperatures below 15°C.
Use an airy, well-draining mixture based on coconut chips and bark, for example.
No specific requirements, although the air may safely be on the drier side (however, for small plants or cuttings at least 55%).
Once a month a very light dose of high-quality houseplant nutrition is sufficient. Not too much, to maintain variegation and avoid over-fertilization.
Allow the soil to dry out completely between waterings. Give only demineralized water or clean rainwater to avoid accumulation of salts.
Flowering is rare indoors, but possible in ideal conditions. Flowering is inconspicuous and often occurs only on older plants.
This plant is a rare piece of botanical art: a combination of dark drama and delicate variegated patterns. Where the classic variegated Zamioculcas looks playful and light, this variety exudes understated luxury. Ideal for those who love the unusual, the stylish and the rare.
