Acacia senegal, commonly known as gum arabic tree, is a small to medium-sized deciduous tree native to the semi-arid regions of sub-Saharan Africa, particularly Sudan, Senegal, and other parts of the Sahel. It typically grows to a height of 5 to 12 meters and is well adapted to arid and drought-prone environments, thriving in sandy or loamy soils with good drainage. The tree has a spreading, umbrella-shaped crown and is often multi-stemmed with a rough, fissured bark and sharp, white thorns. Its feathery bipinnate leaves and small, pale yellow to white spherical flower heads bloom during the rainy season, followed by flat, papery seed pods. Acacia senegal is best known as the primary commercial source of gum arabic, a natural exudate used extensively in the food, cosmetic, and printing industries as a stabilizer, emulsifier, and adhesive. The tree plays an important ecological role by improving soil fertility through nitrogen fixation and providing habitat and forage for wildlife. It is also used in agroforestry systems to combat desertification and as a source of firewood and fencing material.
