Polyscias scutellaria 'Fabian' forms a trunked, tree-like Polyscias with rounded leaves on a dense woody frame. Mature plants develop a stout stem and compact crown, giving the plant a trunked indoor-tree structure.
New growth can show warmer tones, and the rounded leaves can display darker purple-toned undersides. Steady warmth, bright filtered light and balanced watering help the crown stay fuller after acclimation.
Polyscias scutellaria grows as a wet-tropical shrub or small tree and has a cultivated tropical background from East Malesia to the south-west Pacific. In the 'Fabian' form, the trunk and rounded leaf crown define the container-grown shape.
The woody stem holds the plant’s structure, while the leaves respond quickly to stress. A sudden move, cold air or a wet root zone can cause shedding even when the trunk remains firm.
Keep Polyscias scutellaria 'Fabian' away from pets and children that may chew the foliage. Ingested plant material can cause irritation and digestive discomfort.
Polyscias scutellaria was placed in its current combination by Francis Raymond Fosberg in 1948. The genus name Polyscias comes from Greek roots meaning “many” and “shade” or “umbrella.”
