This exceptional Model 1855 Colt Root, serial number 349, was manufactured in 1855, the very first year of production. Early examples such as this are highly sought after, and nickel-finished versions are particularly rare. The vast majority of Root revolvers were blued, making this 8 inch nickel example highly desirable for collectors.
The pistol retains approximately 90% of its original nickel finish, showing only light, honest wear from age and careful handling. The nickel surface remains bright and even, with crisp edges and well-defined markings throughout.
The walnut grip retains its smooth, original varnish with only minor handling marks, complementing the overall appearance beautifully. The cylinder scene is clear and sharply detailed, with strong factory etching still visible.
As with all Root models, this example features the distinctive solid frame—a design unique among Colt’s percussion revolvers—and the sidehammer action that set it apart from Colt’s open-top counterparts.
A fine and early representative of Colt’s innovative design, this first-year Root with a rare nickel finish displays outstanding preservation and mechanical integrity.
