A material that offers new possibilities, a designer who pursues new ways, a connection that creates new worlds. For a bathing experience that awakens unknown emotions.
The extraordinary design potential of Laufen’s revolutionary SaphirKeramik reveals itself in the new bathroom collection Val, designed for the Swiss bathroom specialist by star designer Konstantin Grcic from Munich. Simple architectural lines, extremely narrow edges, and fine surface structures make the washbasins of this collection globally unique. The Val range includes washbasins, washbasin bowls, trays, bathtubs, and new bathroom furniture from the Space collection.
Konstantin Grcic was born in 1965 in Munich. After training as a cabinet maker at the John Make-peace School (Dorset, England), he studied industrial design at the Royal College of Art in London. In 1991, Grcic founded his studio Konstantin Grcic Industrial Design (KGID) in Berlin and today he is one of the leading industrial designers of modern times.

The designs of Konstantin Grcic are characterized by a careful research and a great passion for technology and materials. Konstantin Grcic defines function in human terms, combining formal strictness with considerable mental acuity and humour. Regarding the minimalist design of his products, Grcic himself prefers to speak of simplicity.
Grcic was born 1965 in Munich and was trained as a cabinet maker at The John Makepeace School (Dorset, England) before studying Design at the Royal College of Art in London. In 1991 he founded his design studio Konstantin Grcic Industrial Design (KGID) in Munich and since then is developping furniture, products and lighting for some of the leading companies in the world of design like Authentics, BD Ediciones, ClassiCon, Flos, Flötotto, Magis, Maharam, Mattiazzi, Muji, Nespresso, Plank, Serafino Zani, Thomas-Rosenthal and Vitra.
Work by Konstantin Grcic forms part of the permanent collections of the world´s most important design museums, including the MoMA in New York and the Centre Georges Pompidou in Paris, and his work has been shown internationally in important design exhibitions for example at the Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen (Rotterdam, 2006), Haus der Kunst (Munich, 2006) and The Art Institute of Chicago (2009). With "Konstantin Grcic - Panorama" the Vitra Design Museum (Weil am Rhein, Germany) is now presenting the largest solo exhibition on Konstantin Grcic and his work to date.
Besides his work as designer Grcic also curates exhibitions. In 2012 he was responsible for the exhibition design of the German Pavillon at the 13th Architecture Biennale in Venice.

Regarding the cooperation with Laufen Konstantin Grcic is espacially attracted by the possibilities offered by the revolutionary SaphirKeramik. Aim of his work is to bring out the values of an industrial precision that has the flavour of tailor-made work. Until now, a collection of rectangular and circular washbasins with textures has come about, which seem like jewels thanks to the filigree ceramics.
"What makes the washbasins made of SaphirKeramik so extraordinary is the subtle reduction of materials offered by technological innovation, as well as the geometrical rhythms that shape the surfaces." - Konstantin Grcic
SaphirKeramik, patented and available on the market, is one of the latest globally significant innovations from Laufen. This revolutionary, ceramic material reaches its exceptional hardness blended with corundum, a colorless mineral, which is a component of sapphires. This gives SaphirKeramik a flexural strength equal to that of steel. Yet it has the potential to be wafer-thin, giving designers almost infinite freedom to experiment – and tear up the rulebook of bathroom design.
Laufen is committed to protecting the environment, placing great emphasis on sustainable manufacturing processes in regard to energy, water and materials uses. Laufen implores efficient and eco-friendly practices across all stages of production – from product development to marketing materials. For example, Laufen uses the waste heat generated in the production process to dry our ceramic pieces.
Laufen's production sites operate in accordance with strict, international environmental principles. The Swiss Agency for Efficient Energy Use has awarded Keramik Laufen AG its prestigious label for being actively involved in voluntary climate protection. Additionally, Laufen Austria AG- with its production sites at Wilhemsburg and Gmunden- was awarded the EMAS environmental prize for outstanding environmental performance. Overall, Laufen supports and promotes active environmental policies; policies that are embedded in the company's principles and upheld by our workforce around the world.
