Discover the unparalleled fragrance and flavour of the Gamthi variety curry leaf plant, a rarity that sets it apart from the common varieties available in shops. This unique seedling offers a more aromatic and flavourful addition to your culinary creations, perfect for enhancing your favourite dishes.
In 2014, the EU introduced a ban on the import of fresh curry plant leaves to prevent the spread of citrus greening disease, making fresh curry leaves difficult to find in Europe. While dried leaves are still available, they lack the intense flavour of fresh leaves. Growing your own curry leaf plant ensures you always have fresh leaves on hand, ready to enhance your curries, lentil dishes, chutneys, and soups. Fresh curry leaves do not keep well when off the plant, even in the fridge, so growing your own is the best way to enjoy their full flavour.
At Happiest Plants, we cater to the diverse needs and preferences of our growers by offering a range of curry leaf plant varieties, each with its unique characteristics. To help you choose the best plant for your needs, we’ve implemented a review system that rates each variety based on flavour, aroma, and growth rate. Here’s a look at the varieties we offer:
Suhasini is our most recommended and premium variety due to its supreme flavor and aroma. It has smaller leaves and is highly sought after, making it our most expensive variety. Although it is a slow grower initially, it becomes low-maintenance after hard pruning at around 24 months.
Flavour: 5/5
Aroma: 5/5
Growth Rate: 3/5
The Indian Gamthi is another premium variety, known for its striking red leaf strands and exceptional flavour and aroma. It is a slow grower and produces fewer seeds, which limits availability and increases its price. This variety is highly desirable for its unique appearance.
Flavour: 4/5
Aroma: 5/5
Growth Rate: 2/5
Ceylon Gamthi is a rare variety that grows quickly and offers enhanced flavour and aroma. It has larger and wider leaves, making it a practical choice for those looking for a fast-growing, low-maintenance plant. However, it is more susceptible to pests.
Flavour: 4/5
Aroma: 4/5
Growth Rate: 4/5
Andra Variety
The Andra variety is a recent development aimed at fast growth with acceptable flavor and aroma. Recognizable by its distinct leaf shape, it is becoming increasingly common due to large-scale tissue culture propagation. While we don’t sell this variety individually, it is included in our curry leaf bundle.
Flavour: 3/5
Aroma: 3/5
Growth Rate: 4/5
The Dwarf variety is ideal for those living in flats or apartments. It is a short, bushy plant that produces abundant, flavourful leaves. It offers a good balance between size and productivity.
Flavour: 3/5
Aroma: 4/5
Growth Rate: 4/5
The Regular variety is the most common and affordable option. It is a good starting point for beginners and grows relatively quickly. While it may not have the intense flavor of the rarer varieties, it still enhances many dishes with its essential curry leaf taste and aroma.
Flavour: 2/5
Aroma: 2/5
Growth Rate: 3/5
Indo/Thai Variety
The Indo/Thai variety is the fastest-growing among all curry leaf plants. However, it significantly lacks flavour and aroma, which is why we do not sell this variety.
Flavour: 1/5
Aroma: 1/5
Growth Rate: 5/5
By understanding the specific characteristics and ratings of each variety, you can choose the curry leaf plant that best suits your needs, whether you prioritize flavor, aroma, growth rate, or overall plant aesthetics.

Pruned Plant Option (Lower Price):
Curry Leaf plant is actually a shrub (small tree) that grows slowly. Therefore, the Curry leaf plant is not a fast grower in the initial stage. It takes a couple of years for the young curry leaf plant to establish roots and adjust to the new environment before it starts to grow in height. The most crucial point of curry leaf growing is after 24 months when the plant is due for a heavy pruning - we believe this is very essential to turn it from a 'Plant' to a 'Tree' phase.
Growing information:
Curry leaf plants are not the easiest of plants to grow here in UK because of course they originate in much hotter climates so they do need a little bit of extra care when growing here. All customers will receive a PDF booklet to your email with all the instructions for taking care of the plant. If you have any difficulty with accessing your email, we are happy to send the instructions printed along with the plant. Link to our Curry Leaf Growing guide here
