About this artwork
Edgar Degas was a French Impressionist painter from the 19th century, well-known for his oil paintings and pastel drawings. He aimed to encapsulate the transient moments of contemporary life, with a strong affinity for the topic of dance. Degas created a collection of coloured pastel drawings of dancers, including 'Blue Dancers'. This piece features four ballerinas in lavender-blue attire, dancing during a recital, a performance by a small ensemble. The use of blue paste and a fluid composition generates a sense of unity among the dancers.
