Euphorbia milii ‘Variegated’, commonly known as Crown of Thorns or Christ Plant, is a remarkable succulent shrub renowned for its creamy variegation along the leaf margins and mottled through the foliage. This stunning colouring enhances the plant's overall appeal, creating a striking backdrop for its vivid red blooms. Native to Madagascar, Euphorbia milii has captivated gardeners worldwide and thrives both as a houseplant and in gardens across warmer Australian climates. This variegated cultivar adds a distinctive flair to the timeless charm of the species.
Historically, Euphorbia milii is steeped in cultural and religious significance. It is believed that the species was introduced to the Middle East in ancient times, and legend associates it with the crown of thorns worn by Jesus Christ during his crucifixion. This connection inspired the common English name "Crown of Thorns," as the plant's sharp spines and deep red bracts symbolise the thorns and blood. The species name honours Baron Milius, a former Governor of Réunion, who introduced it to France in 1821. In its native Madagascar, it is known as songosongo, a name also applied to other Euphorbia species.
This woody shrub features densely spiny, branched stems that provide natural protection. Its obovate leaves, up to 5 cm long, emerge with vibrant cream and green variegation but drop as they age, leaving the spiny stems exposed. Throughout the year, but especially in spring and summer, Euphorbia milii ‘Variegated’ produces clusters of small cyathia flowers with vivid red bracts that stand out brilliantly against its marbled foliage.
Thriving in bright, indirect light or morning sun, this plant prefers well-draining soil, such as a succulent potting mix, and moderate watering, allowing the soil to dry between drinks. While it tolerates Australia’s warmer climates, frost protection is essential. Handle with care, as its milky sap can irritate skin and eyes. Euphorbia milii ‘Variegated’ offers a unique combination of historical intrigue, ornamental beauty, and low-maintenance care.
