Eucalyptus 'Styx' is a striking, fast-growing ornamental variety of the Tasmanian Blue Gum, prized for its intense silvery-blue foliage and aromatic presence. Unlike its massive cousins in the wild, 'Styx' is bred for a more manageable, compact, and highly branched habit, making it a favorite for modern landscapes and mixed containers. The juvenile leaves are large, rounded, and covered in a waxy, glaucous bloom that gives them a shimmering, metallic appearance. As the plant matures, it develops smooth, peeling bark in shades of grey and cream. When crushed, the leaves release the classic, refreshing eucalyptus scent, which also acts as a natural insect repellent.
Quick Facts:
Foliage: Vibrant, silvery-blue rounded leaves that are highly aromatic.
Flowers: Small, creamy-white "pompom" clusters that occasionally appear in late winter or spring (though primarily grown for foliage).
Light: Full Sun is essential. It requires at least 6-8 hours of direct light to maintain its compact shape and intense blue color.
Growth Habit: Vigorous and upright; typically reaches 6-10 feet in gardens or containers, but can be kept much smaller with regular pruning.
Hardiness: USDA Zones 8-11. In colder climates (Zones 7 and below), it is most often grown as a fast-growing annual or overwintered indoors as a patio plant.
Landscape Use: Perfect as a "thriller" in large containers, a quick-growing privacy screen, or a focal point in Mediterranean-style gardens. Its stems are highly sought after for fresh or dried floral arrangements.
Pro Tip: To keep 'Styx' looking its best, embrace the "Cut Back" method. Eucalyptus produces its most beautiful, rounded silvery leaves on juvenile growth. Regularly pruning or "coppicing" the plant in early spring encourages a flush of this fresh foliage and prevents it from becoming too leggy or tree-like. It is extremely drought-tolerant once established but prefers well-drained soil; "wet feet" is the quickest way to stress this plant.
