After studying briefly at art college, Wincup decided to follow family tradition by going to sea and joined the Merchant Navy, gaining his Master Mariner certificate. During the years at sea he maintained a keen interest in art, exhibiting locally and abroad. Once back ashore he devoted much time to his watercolours, many of which depict tranquil scenes of the Norfolk Broads.
After many years traversing the oceans of the world, he developed a desire to convey atmosphere and tranquility in his watercolours, always working to retain transparency. He uses only the best water colours and materials available to achieve this vital feature of the watercolour medium. He is particularly inspired by early morning and evening light, which is especially significant in England's relatively flat area of East Anglia, where he lived.
This painting is an excellent example of Wincup's love of light and his artistic skill in capturing the essence of East Anglia's landscape.
