The Balaoanum is a spectacular variety of Anthurium that is a joy to grow. The leaf size, texture and shape dramatically change as the leaf matures, with the sinus becoming more pronounced and the texture becoming more rippled. Perfect for those who love big leaves, or those collecting less common houseplants.
Native to Ecuador, the Balaoanum is an epiphyte, growing off of other plants in humid forests, where it receives bright, dappled light. This plant starts off with sword-shaped leaves, but as it matures becomes more heart-shaped. Unlike most popular Anthuriums, this plants' veins do not contrast with the bright green leaves, but instead blend in, creating a subtle ripple effect. To simulate their epiphytic nature, we recommend growing this plant on a live moss pole, where their thick roots can climb and establish beyond the pot.
Although this Anthurium is an uncommon find, it is fairly straight forward for care. Bright, indirect light, consistent watering and high humidity will give this plant what it needs. But, regular repotting and fertilising in the growing season, plus consistent warmth will allow this plant to truly thrive. As the leaves are quite thin compared to other Anthuriums, make sure to avoid heaters, radiators and draughts to ensure the humidity is consistent.
